United have been linked with a string of goalkeepers throughout the summer, including Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain, plus Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez. There were even links with a shock return move for former No.1 David de Gea. But Onana and Bayindir are expected to remain the club’s two favoured options, according to reports from .

Onana’s displays for the Reds were erratic last season, but the club are convinced that his performances are on-par with other Premier League keepers. The Cameroon international missed the season curtain-raiser against Arsenal due to injury – after missing the entirety of pre-season. And United boss Ruben Amorim has been forced to deny that he has dropped his goalkeeper.

"No, I didn’t drop Onana from the squad," Amorim said post-match. "I didn’t drop one of the other two from the squad [Bayindir, Heaton]. So it’s not the case of dropping Onana.
"It’s not putting Onana in just one week without seeing the game, without time, with training."
